The pineapple plant, native to South America, is widely cultivated throughout the tropics and warmer areas of the sub-tropics. The plant is grown for its fruit, which can either be consumed fresh or processed into fruit juice, jam, dried fruit, preserves, or canned slices. Annual world production has more than doubled over the past two decades, from 12.9 million metric tons (MT) in 1994 to more than 25.8 million MT in 2016.
Pineapples in Kenya are grown for both fresh and processing markets; most commercial production is grown for processing into products such as pineapple concentrate and juice. The most common varieties of pineapple grown inKenya are Smooth Cayenne, MD2, and Sweet 16, with Smooth Cayenne accounting for almost 80% of total pineapple production volume.
